The Gift of Intuition

Intuition is something we frequently talk about without really understanding what it is, how we can trust our own intuition, or how we can relate to the intuition others have about our lives. What is intuition? Intuition is a knowing…different from the knowledge we possess already… it is not a knowing that comes from books or education. It is an apparent ability to acquire knowledge without inference or the use of reason. The word “intuition” comes from the Latin word “inturei” which is roughly translated as meaning “to look inside” or “to contemplate.” While our intuition may be informed by our experiences it is not a knowing derived purely of it. It is a knowing that comes from within. It is almost an instinctive sense of something that may be in existence in some realm. Often our intuition is something that we describe as a “gut” feeling. Well, there is [...]

What comes first – changing the belief or changing the circumstance. . .the classic Chicken or the Egg?

Have you ever been stuck in a situation where you just can’t seem to see the way out?  The harder you try to worse it gets?  You try to talk about it, work around it, apply new strategies, and yet . . . you hear yourself saying things like “… I just can’t get a break – or when is this going to end? Or enough already!” When you hear things like that coming out of your mouth it is your first clue that you are really stuck.  No kidding.  Not stuck how you think I mean it – but stuck in a belief; a belief that has some really deep roots and has a grip on you that is so strong it is in your DNA.  Lately, I have been feeling stuck.  My business partners and I launched a new business about 18 months ago (you know – this one [...]

What's our role in a global crisis?

We have all probably recently heard some of the shocking and disturbing details from Haiti.  An article from the Associated Press starts with, “The tiny bodies of children lay in piles next to the ruins of their collapsed school. People with faces covered by white dust and the blood of open wounds roamed the streets. Frantic doctors wrapped heads and stitched up sliced limbs in a hotel parking lot.”  It’s the description of heart-breaking devastation. I can’t begin to wrap my mind around it.  I don’t know that I want to. So, what do we do in the face of such information?  What’s our role when there’s a global crisis? There are probably infinite possible responses to this question. Here are a few that align with what we aim to practice in the Tiara community. Allow the recent events to shift your perspective.  When you hear of a calamity in [...]

Everyone Deserves a Snow Day!

Today, in Chicago, Illinois it is snowing like crazy and they are predicting about 10-12 inches of snow to fall.  As a kid, I would pray for snow days, but it always seemed that the more they predicted the “big” storm, the less it materialized.  As an adult, I still love snow days.  This morning as I was leaving my house (an extra 30 minutes early to be on-time for my first meeting), I pulled out onto my street and said out loud “everyone deserves a snow day now and then”.  I love the anticipation of a snow day.  I love having to slow down and cut a lot of superfluous things out of my schedule.  I love the memories it brings up from my youth.  I love the beauty of the blanket of white (before it becomes the ugly black slush).  And, when I return to my home, it makes me grateful that I have [...]
