The Road to Acceptance

Last week I was having a conversation with a colleague about acceptance.  Acceptance is one of the six distinctions we focus on in our programs.  My colleague asked if I could remember a situation where I experienced profound acceptance.  As I considered my life there were a number of examples I could think of…my Mother’s death, a client deciding not to move forward with a project, my knee surgery after taking a fall and many others.  I choose to look at a situation in my career that was very challenging.  I was a leader in a division of a large healthcare corporation.  The company decided to narrowly focus the overall business and, as a result, set about to sell all but two divisions.  Much to the disappointment of the leadership team and the staff, our division was sold to our largest competitor.  This occurred sixteen years ago and remains the [...]

Rest in the Moment

Lately I have been thinking a lot about the idea of “rest.” I am someone who has a lot on her plate juggling the roles and responsibilities of being an entrepreneur with two coaching companies, a wife, a mother of two kids, a family member, a friend, a volunteer, etc. For as long as I can remember I have always thought about rest as requiring time. And as you might guess, since I seem to run short on time, I often run short on rest. Well, recently I had a real epiphany about “rest” in my life…that rest is less about time and more about where my attention is. I had been thinking about what it is that actually wears me out. Sure not getting enough sleep or exercise, holding onto resentment, working long hours, or eating junk food can all contribute to being zapped of energy. But in truth, [...]

Yo-Yo and Happiness

I feel like a yo-yo these days. I didn’t think I was going to be able to write a blog. This blog. No area where I feel more “challenged” in my personal leadership, then in my family life. I like to thank you Amy for sharing your story (previous blog) about what was happening with you and with your dad. Your story resonates with me and makes me aware of the mixed bag of feelings that we all are embodying as human beings. A mix that is brought to extremes in situations that concern family (persons we love) and life/death questions. A mix that also projects itself out to other circles of our life, including our jobs. I love my son. More than words can say. He is having a truly difficult time right now and I get myself into real trouble when I think of my desire for him [...]

Enjoying THIS moment. Even when…

Last week my Dad was in the hospital in the ICU. He thought he was going to die, and he didn’t get any disagreement from his doctors. My family talked about and prepared for his potential death. It was a sad, emotional week. And, at the same time, it was a week full of love and appreciation and support. (My Dad is actually stable now and has been moved to a rehabilitation center. He’s got some significant therapy ahead of him, and he is ready and willing to do the work.) Why am I telling you that we thought my Dad might die last week? Because it reminded me – on a number of levels – about how precious each moment in our lives is. I feel the sense of urgency in my family right now. We are certainly making every moment with Dad count. We’ve renewed our perspective on [...]
