Do you know yourself? Are you centered?

These two questions are typical growth and development questions asked in many creative ways. There is little argument that answering “yes” to either of these questions shows strength, clarity, wisdom, balance, and other admirable traits. Yet we get a different reaction and response when we combine them and ask: Are you self-centered? No, of course not! I put others first! I am altruistic! I lead a mission-based life of service! I understand that we resist being egotistical, shallow, selfish, bragging, or other seemingly negative traits that would indicate we think too highly of ourselves. I know that we’ve all met people who we both envy and judge who seem to be driven by short-sighted personal agendas. However, the flip side is also dangerous. If we are always serving others to the detriment of our own well-being we often become depleted, weary, bitter, and judgmental. At the bottom of that slippery [...]

Are you ready to Mother yourself?

Last Sunday we celebrated Mother’s Day, a day set aside to honor our Mothers.  Many of us also take this opportunity to acknowledge the other women in our lives who generously give their support and contribute in numerous ways to us. In Tiara, we’ve also been talking about how, as women, we easily give to others and, often, are challenged to receive in equal measure.  We’ve been considering the question “how can I be a Mother to myself?” At the heart of this inquiry, is a shift in perspective, a new belief that we are valuable and worthy of the same care and support we provide to others.  It sounds easy, yet we prioritize the needs of our families, friends and colleagues above our own desires and well-being. Last week I saw an interview with Michelle Obama about her “Let’s Move” campaign.  The interviewer asked her how she finds the [...]

An experiment in alignment

This month in our Tiara Programs we are practicing alignment. We are all taking on what we’ve termed an “alignment experiment” to practice and increase our personal alignment. How do you practice alignment? Well, there are many ways. You can look at how your life is aligned with (incorporates in a way that works for you) your values, your strengths, and who you truly want to be. For example, one of my values is trust. And, I can see that when I’m not trusting that I am the one who is supposed to be writing the book that I’m currently in the process of writing, then I get all worried and fearful about having a book that flops, I spin my wheels and am totally unproductive. I get out of alignment. When I notice this, I can practice alignment by reminding myself about how I’ve felt called to write this [...]

Cleanse or no cleanse? How to feel good?

I made myself happy at least twice, this week. The first time was when I made the decision that I wanted to do a cleanse. A lemon juice one. 10 glasses a day, a large drink, a mix of lemon juice, maple syrup, water, and a sniff of cayenne pepper, 10 days in a row. I had recently rediscovered the fresh taste of lemon and I loved it. Also, quite a number of friends and people around me are endulging in cleanses, or recently completed one, all for different reasons. I also had some good reasons: have a bit more energy, especially early evening, and loose a few pounds… I’d really love to grow back into some gorgeous trousers I bought many years ago and well, you know, things happen, and now they don’t fit anymore. I have an important celebration coming up on May 22nd and those trousers… they [...]
