Believing in magic …

by Betsy Sobiech
June 1, 2010

Today I am flying from the Netherlands through Poland to Chicago carrying two broomsticks. It is easy for me to recognize the unpredictability, hilarity, craziness, miraculousness, and magic of life in a circumstance like this. In fact the broomsticks were given to me by my Dutch Tiara partners specifically to remind me that life is magic. What’s even more interesting to me, though, is witnessing my ingrained need to act as if carrying gold-and-bronze-spray-painted broomsticks through multiple countries is normal. I put on my standard coat of nonchalance, throw on a scarf of indifference, and walk through the security lines determined to appear business-as-usual.

Why do I do that? Why do a keep magic and miracles at an arms distance? Why do I insist upon acting nonplussed and unruffled? Yes, I practice recognizing synchronicity and being grateful for blessings on a regular basis. But do I really allow life’s magic to be the priority and the guide everyday? Not when there are bills to pay. Not when I hear “bad” news. Not when it might get me stopped at the security gate.

While writing this it seems like the bravest thing to do would be to tell you all that when I get off this plane and land in Chicago that I will embrace magic fully, at the cellular level, in my smile and my step the presence of magic in my life. But I’d fail. I’d get off the plane and my usual expression and stride would take over immediately. So here’s what I will promise. I will be intensely present to, aware of, and thankful for magic moments over the next week. In fact, I’ll let magic be my priority and my guide! I’ll let you know what happens.

In the meantime, what can you do to be lighter, more present to magic, miracles, and synchronicity in your life today?

  1. Well, first of all what I have to do is STOP and pay attention. I have the tendency to look and think forward wherever I am not noticing the magic that screams at me.

It was a couple of years ago that I noticed this “habit” of mine. I will tell you the story.
In 2001 I and a couple of colleagues created a fabulous “sabbatical week”. I can tell you, it was a beauty. We imagined all the ingredients, the location, the clients……It was pure joy to put this product together. At the end we never marketed it! I don’t remember what exactly happened and as usual I moved on. 2 years later I provided training weeks on a regular basis for a big trainings institute. It must have been the 3rd or 4th training when, during a morning meditation session (they never had done that), suddenly it struck me. There I was, executing exactly the kind of sabbatical week I pictured two years ago. What struck me even more was that it took me so long to even recognize it!!! And the best part: marketing, logistics, beautiful locations, it all was arranged for me. I only had to show up. So when your imagination manifests it is often more magical than your dream itself. BUT, you have to pay attention. When I realized that and started to pay attention I could see that I had already missed a lot of manifested magic in my life: my husband, my kids, my living in Africa and South America, and I could go on and on. Nowadays I no longer miss out on the big things; however I still have to be aware of this habit when it comes to little things. Beautiful yellow and white flowers along the highway. Warm wind on my face and in my hair and the flapping ears of my dog, the smell of summer in freshly cut grass. Magic is everywhere around you…..and if you pay attention you can recognize your own creation in it.

    Have a magical week, Andrea

Hi Betsy, your story reminds me of the time earlier this year when Kiya Cote and I (two Attraction Wizards) were leaving New Mexico after a retreat with Jan and Alan et all Wizards. We had our Magical Wands in hand, the ones we made at the retreat. They were wonderfully magical wands and we held them all the way through security. At one point one of the security guards asked me to touch him with my wand for a little magical treat. It was such fun! The thing is, when you are blatantly magic, then those in to magic are drawn to you… and who knows, they may turn out to be your perfect customer!

    Betsy,

You asked, “Why do I do that?” The answer is because you are human and that means you care about what others think and want to blend in instead of appearing different.

As you grow in your personal development you will have many shifts. That area may or may not be one of them. Whatever happens, it will be okay, and the right thing for you. Keep noticing, and being more aware, and the magic will happen! You’ll be in the flow before you know it.

Practicing self-care, spending time in nature, helping other people and causes I believe in,being with family and friends and like-minded people, writing, meditating, and doing fun things, are just a few of the ways that I attract the magic and miracles and serendipity into my life.

  4. Many times I have been googling for information of this topic, never found a real source before now, how cool is that, thanks.
